Re-roofing FAQs · The re-roof process
Does a re-roofer need to be an LBP?
Only if the re-roof needs a building consent. Roofing on a home is restricted building work when it needs consent, and restricted work has to be done or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP). A like-for-like re-roof that doesn't need consent isn't restricted, so the law doesn't require an LBP.
What to know
- Which licence. The LBP Roofing class is split into areas of practice. For longrun steel, look for "Profiled Metal Roof and/or Wall Cladding". Carpentry LBPs can also install lightweight profiled metal roofing, and certified plumbers are treated as licensed for roofing they're competent to do.
- The paperwork. On consented work, each LBP must give you and the council a Record of Building Work when they finish.
- Check the register. The public LBP register shows licence classes, areas of practice and any discipline in the last three years.
- Owner-builders can apply for an exemption to do restricted work on their own home.
On 31 October 2026, the register listed 45 licensed Roofing LBPs in Hamilton with the profiled metal area of practice, 7 in Cambridge and 6 in Te Awamutu.
Does a re-roof usually need consent?
Not when it's like-for-like. See Hamilton City Council consent for a re-roof.
